The artists are all part of an extraordinary ph15 project, which places cameras and film in the hands of young people who are then invited to go shoot. The results of their explorations make up the body of the exhibition. During the run of the exhibit, a live video conference will be set up to provide the opportunity for UNLV students and the young Argentine photographers to interact.
The ph15 workshop is offered through a community center in the city of Buenos Aires. In the beginning of their relationship with the sponsoring foundation, students are given cameras, which they are allowed to keep for life if they complete the first two-years of the program. The aim of the project is to teach kids the creative power of photography by giving them a form of expression that reflects their own values and culture.
The exhibit was organized by Catherine Angel, Professor of Art at UNLV. She proposed the exhibition be shown at her home school after an invitation to teach a course in photography at the ph15 workshop. ph15 presents gallery goers artwork with an international flavor. The international aspect is a new direction that both the chair of the Art Department, Jeff Burden, and the director of the gallery, Jerry Schefcik, are working to include as an ongoing element of the gallery's annual schedule.
This project has been funded in part by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
UNLV is a doctoral-degree-granting institution of 28,000 students and 3,300 faculty and staff.
